Definition

A dot plot is a simple graphical display that uses dots to represent individual data values along a number line. Each dot stands for one occurrence of a value in the data set.

A histogram is a graph that displays numerical data by grouping values into intervals called bins. The height of each bar shows the frequency (or relative frequency) of data within each interval.

A box plot is a graphical representation of data based on the five-number summary: minimum, first quartile (Q1), median, third quartile (Q3), and maximum.

Summary

Dot plots are useful for small data sets and help show the distribution, clusters, gaps, and outliers clearly. They make it easy to see how often values occur and to identify the shape of the data (symmetric, skewed, etc.). Because each data point is shown, dot plots give a very detailed view of the data.

Histograms are best for large data sets. They help show the overall distribution and shape of the data, including whether it is symmetric, skewed, or uniform. Unlike bar graphs, histogram bars touch each other because the data represents continuous values.

Box plots show the spread and center of a data set and make it easy to identify outliers. The box represents the middle 50% of the data (interquartile range), while the “whiskers” extend to the smallest and largest values (excluding outliers). They are especially useful for comparing multiple data sets quickly and efficiently.
