# Printable Math Flash Cards

Flash Cards can help your child to memorize basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. Each of the documents below have up to eight pages with each page containing four questions.

They are listed below alongside an example of the type of question they contain. These cards can be used whenever there is a spare minute or two to practice basic facts.

Before working with the flash cards and with other memorization methods, be sure that your child has an understanding of the arithmetic concepts. Working with real objects such as counters (buttons or anything that can easily be manipulated will do) will help develop such an understanding.

The following cards and similar resources that can help with memorizing math facts are included on this page:

## What are Flash Cards?

Flashcards are small two-sided note cards that contain the question on one side and the solution on the other. They are, in fact, memory-aid tools intended to help the child memorise various mathematics facts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division etc. Flashcards are not a new concept to learning methodologies. They are an age-old technique that is highly relevant in today’s age as well. it is not just the students who benefit from using flashcards. They are extensively used by teachers in classroom teaching programs to enable children to understand and practice various concepts of different subjects, including mathematics. Let us understand how the flashcards work?

## How Flash Cards Work?

Flashcards are widely used as a learning drill to aid memorization. The use of flashcards involves the following steps –

• Flash cards are two – sided cards. One part of the flash card displays the question, for example, it may show up 32 – 5 = _______.
• When the child is shown the flash card, he  / she is supposed ro come up with the answer of the question that has been flashed on the card.
• The back side of the car faces you. This side contains the answer.
• So, once the child and answered it, you can check the correctness of the answer and reverse the flash card to show the result to the child as well.

This way flashcards can be used not just for improving memory but for practising questions in mathematics as well. Here’s an example that will help understand the working of the flashcards –

## Why use Flash Cards?

Flashcards have been used as a practice and memory–aid tool for a long time. What is it that makes the use of flashcards relevant in the modern education system as well –

### Portability

You can carry flashcards anywhere or use them at your convenience, even at your dining table. How about a small game of 10 questions before you start the dinner? Instead of carrying the books or notebooks along when you move out, you can just carry a handful of flash cars which can help your child practice mathematics anywhere.

### Inexpensive

Unlike books, flashcards are not expensive. We have read to download flashcards for you which are just a click away. Moreover, you don’t need flashcards with lots of illustrations to practice a topic. All you need is a simple flashcard that displays the question correctly.

### Speed Efficiency

Flashcards are not just portable. They help in improving the efficiency of the child as well. A child can make use of flashcards in a timed manner that will help improve the speed as well as efficiency in solving various mathematics problems.

### Recognising the Strong and the Weak Areas

Flashcards are often part of spaced practice. Moreover, the repetition that is offered through the use of flashcards helps you figure out what information you can remember easily and what needs some amount of additional effort. This helps you figure out the strengths as well as the weak areas in mathematics. For instance, you may find that the child is good at addition while he/she is a bit struggling in multiplication. This helps you focus more on the areas that need attention and improve the academic abilities of the child.

### Time Management

From a time management perspective, flashcards allow you to take advantage of short amounts of time that become available throughout the day or week, in addition to during planned study sessions.

### Making it Easier to learn

Reading along the lines in the books can be boring at times. With flashcards, the child can just jump on them and practice solving any type of mathematics problem. A few minutes is all it takes.

### Develops instant memory ability

As the child attempts to memorise the answers quickly through the repeated use of flashcards, this leads to an improved ability to memorise things and basic mathematical calculations.

## Which age groups do the Flash Cards Benefit?

It is usually assumed by people that flashcards are relevant only for early learners. However, that is not so. Flashcards are equally beneficial for any age group involving any area of studies such as mathematics, engineering and even medicine. So, there are flashcards for number counting to the complex calculations in mathematics that involve formulas.

So, flashcards can be as simple as single-digit subtraction.

Flash cards can also be for double digit addition such as –

Hence, Flashcards are a really handy resource to have and can prove to be extremely useful at every stage of the formative years. They are a great way to present, practise as well as and recycle mathematical problems. Moreover, they are not just meant to be used in the class. They are equally helpful when used individually by parents to help their child practice and improve his / her mathematical problem-solving abilities.

Our flashcards have been strategically designed to enhance and encourage active recall. The general format of our online flashcards is usually a question on one side of the card and the answer on the other.

## How can your benefit the most through the use of flash cards?

It is important to understand the proper way in which the flashcards should be used else you may not be able to maximise the benefits of their use. So, how should you use flashcards?

Shuffle them every time before use – Always ensure that you shuffle the flashcards every time before use. This ensures that the child does not receive the questions in the same order. Another advantage of shuffling is that it prevents the child from memorising the answers in order and promotes

Segregating the cards – After every round of activity it is important to segregate the cars in two categories – “ Answered correctly “and “ Did not know “. This will help you evaluate the weak areas in a better manner.
