## 5th Grade Common Core Aligned Learning Objectives & Standards:

Learning objectives:

In Grade 5, learning instructions should focus on three major areas:  (1) progressing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and an advancing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions which are only limited to unit fractions divided by whole numbers and whole numbers divided by unit fractions;

(2) leveling up to division of whole numbers up to 2-digit divisors, incorporating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing an understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, as well as improving fluency with whole number and decimal operations; and

(3) approaching mastery for understanding volume of solid figures.

a. Conceptual skills

• Distinguish different grouping symbols in evaluating expressions.
• Learners connect the meaning of fractions, of multiplication and division, and the relationship between multiplication and division to understand and discuss why the solutions for multiplying and dividing fractions (unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions) are logically correct.
• Learners make meaning to why division procedures work based on the concepts of base-ten numerals and properties of operations.
• 5th graders refer to the relationship between decimals and fractions, as well as the relationship between finite decimals and whole numbers, to understand and explain why the procedures for multiplying and dividing finite decimals is true.
• Learners treat volume as an attribute of three-dimensional space or solid figures. They understand that volume can be measured by finding the total number of same-size units of volume required to fill the space without gaps or overlaps. They understand that a 1-unit by 1-unit by 1-unit cube is the standard unit for measuring volume.

b. Procedural skills

• Carry out the meaning and usage of grouping symbols to evaluate a mathematical expression composed of four basic mathematical operations.
• They implement their learned concepts of fractions and fraction models to represent the addition and subtraction of fractions when expressing unlike denominators as equivalent calculations with like denominators.
• They exhibit fluency in calculating sums and differences of fractions, and make logical estimates of them.
• They practice mastery of multi-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They execute their understandings of models for decimals, decimal notation, and properties of operations to add and subtract decimals to hundredths.
• They practice efficient and accurate calculation of products and quotients of decimals to hundredths.
• They adopt appropriate units, strategies, and tools for solving problems that involve estimating and measuring volume. Practising decomposing three-dimensional shapes and finding volumes of right rectangular prisms by viewing them as decomposed layers of arrays of cubes. Measuring necessary attributes of shapes in order to determine volumes to solve real world and mathematical problems.
• Constructing and interpreting line plots with fractional units and converting like measurement units
• Plotting and graphing of  points in coordinate plane systems but only limited to quadrant I coordinates

c. Life skills

• 5th graders are expected to acquire a deeper sense of understanding whole numbers and decimals as these concepts are vital in some life scenarios such as comparing the price of two or more goods, determining which is shorter or longer with decimal discrepancies, etc.
• Also, because they learned about the volume of solid figures, this would mean a wider perspective of shapes and space around them. Making the learners more creative and imaginative in manipulating shapes to create new ones.
