Multiplication is a repeated addition. It has multiplicand, multiplier and product, while division is a repeated subtraction. It has dividend, divisor, and quotient.

POWER OF 10

  • This principle helps us to be organized in our system of naming and writing numbers.
  • It is a very helpful way to write down small and large numbers.

Example:

How do we multiply a number/decimal by a power of 10?

Move the decimal point right as many places as there are 0’s in the power. If there are not enough digits, add on 0’s.
1.32 x 10 = 13.2  (move the decimal point one place to the right)
1.32 x 100 = 132  (move the decimal point two places to the right)
1.32 x 100 = 1320  (move the decimal point three places to the right and add 0)
