Why do zeros matter when comparing decimals?

Zeros can help line up place values correctly.
Example:
0.5=0.5000.5 = 0.500Compare:

So:
0.500>0.4780.500 > 0.478Adding zeros does not change the value of a decimal.

How do you compare decimals with different numbers of digits?

Write extra zeros if needed so both decimals have the same number of places.
Example:
Compare:
2.7and2.6952.7 \quad \text{and} \quad 2.695Rewrite:
2.700and2.6952.700 \quad \text{and} \quad 2.695Now compare:
Tenths: 7>67 > 6
So:
2.700>2.6952.700 > 2.695This makes comparing decimals easier and more accurate.
