Summary:

MULTIPLYING WHOLE NUMBERS AND DECIMALS

Multiplication basically means repeated addition. The numbers that are being multiplied are called factors while the resulting number is called product.

RULES IN MULTIPLYING DECIMALS

1. Multiply the numbers just like the method for whole numbers.

  • Beginning on the right, multiply each digit in the top number by each digit in the bottom number, just as with whole numbers.
  • Add the products.

2. Place the decimal point in the product by starting at the right and moving a number of places equal to the sum of the decimal places in both numbers multiplied.

Example:

Compute for the product of 13 and 5.28.

5.28 x 13 = 15.84 + 52.8 = 68.64
