Definition
Military time is a method of telling time using a 24-hour clock instead of the traditional 12-hour clock. In military time, the day begins at 0000 (midnight) and ends at 2359 (11:59 PM). Hours from 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM are written by adding 12 to the standard time hour. For example, 2:00 PM becomes 1400 hours.
Military time is commonly used by the military, hospitals, emergency services, airlines, and other organizations because it reduces confusion between AM and PM times. Using a 24-hour clock helps people communicate time clearly and accurately.
Students learning military time practice important math and real-world problem-solving skills. They compare numbers, convert between 12-hour and 24-hour time systems, and apply time concepts in everyday situations.
The concept aligns with the U.S. Common Core State Standards (CCSS), particularly in the following areas:
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.A.1 – Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.A.2 – Solve word problems involving measurement and time intervals.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.MD.A.1 – Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system.
Understanding the topic supports early algebraic thinking, improves mental math skills, and prepares students for more advanced operations. This concept is widely used in elementary classrooms and is essential for mastering addition and subtraction strategies.
