Definition
Partial products is a multiplication strategy used to break down larger multiplication problems into smaller, easier-to-solve parts. Instead of multiplying whole numbers all at once, each digit is multiplied separately according to its place value, and the results (called partial products) are added together to find the final answer.
For example, to solve :
This method helps students understand how multiplication works through place value and area models.
The strategy is an important part of elementary mathematics instruction because it builds conceptual understanding of multiplication rather than relying only on memorization of algorithms. Students learn how numbers can be decomposed into tens, hundreds, and ones, which strengthens number sense and prepares them for more advanced operations such as algebra and multi-digit division.
The strategy aligns with the U.S. Common Core State Standards (CCSS), particularly in the following areas:
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.5. “Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations.”
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.5. “Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.”
It supports these standards because students use place value understanding and the distributive property to solve multiplication problems. It also serves as a bridge between visual multiplication models and the standard multiplication algorithm commonly taught in upper elementary grades.
