Definition

A fraction multiplication model is a visual or mathematical representation used to show how fractions are multiplied. These models help students understand that multiplying fractions means finding a part of a part. Common models include area models, number lines, and set models. The most frequently used model is the area model, where one fraction is represented horizontally and another vertically, and the overlapping section shows the product.

For example, to solve $\frac{2}{3} \times \frac{3}{4}$​, a rectangle can be divided into thirds in one direction and fourths in the other. The overlapping shaded region represents $\frac{6}{12}$​, which simplifies to $\frac{1}{2}$​.
