Definition
Multiples of whole numbers are the numbers you get when you multiply a whole number by another whole number (including 0). In other words, multiples are the products of repeated addition or multiplication. Every whole number has an unlimited number of multiples.
For example:
- Multiples of 4: 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, …
- Multiples of 7: 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, …
A number can be a multiple of more than one whole number. For example, 24 is a multiple of 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 12.
Understanding multiples of whole numbers helps students recognize number patterns, strengthen multiplication skills, and solve problems involving factors, divisibility, and least common multiples (LCM). Students often learn multiples through skip-counting, repeated addition, multiplication tables, and number lines before applying the concept to more advanced topics such as fractions, ratios, and algebra.

A multiple is the result of multiplying a whole number by another whole number. For example, the multiples of 4 include 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 because these numbers can be written as 4 multiplied by a whole number.
Multiply the number by 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on. You can also use repeated addition or skip-counting. For example, to find the multiples of 6:
6 × 0 = 0, 6 × 1 = 6, 6 × 2 = 12, 6 × 3 = 18
Therefore, the first few multiples of 6 are 0, 6, 12, and 18.
A multiple is found by multiplying a number, while a factor divides a number evenly. For example, 20 is a multiple of 5 because 5 × 4 = 20. Meanwhile, 5 is a factor of 20 because 20 ÷ 5 = 4 with no remainder.
