Definition

Triangle similarity refers to the relationship between two triangles that have the same shape but not necessarily the same size. Two triangles are similar if their corresponding angles are equal and their corresponding sides are proportional.

1. Criteria for Triangle Similarity

There are three main theorems used to prove triangle similarity:

• AA (Angle-Angle) Similarity:
  If two angles of one triangle are congruent to two angles of another triangle, the triangles are similar.
• SSS (Side-Side-Side) Similarity:
  If the three sides of one triangle are proportional to the three sides of another triangle, the triangles are similar.
• SAS (Side-Angle-Side) Similarity:
  If two sides of one triangle are proportional to two sides of another triangle and the included angles are congruent, the triangles are similar.

2. Properties of Similar Triangles

• Corresponding angles are equal.
• Corresponding sides are in the same ratio.
• The ratio of areas of similar triangles is equal to the square of the ratio of corresponding sides.
