The things that you do everyday require rotations, reflections and translations. When you look at yourself, you see yourself as a reflection. When you turn the door knob, you do a rotation. When you move an object horizontally or vertically, that is translation.
A rigid transformation is a transformation of a 2D figure without changing its length, only its position. Reflections, Translations, and Rotations are examples of “Rigid Transformations.”
A reflection can be described as “flipping” an object over the line or border of reflection. The object that will be reflected is called the pre – image and the reflection is called image. The image is usually labelled using the variables (ABC) assigned to the sides or angles with the prime symbol (‘). (A’B’C’)
A TRANSLATION is the movement of an object without deforming or changing its size and shape without turning or mirroring it. It is simply the sliding of an object. The object to move or slide is called the “pre – image” while the translated object is called the “image.” The pre – image is labeled the same as how we label the image and the pre – image from the topic “reflections.”
ROTATION is a transformation that turns a 2D object from a fixed point. The fixed point is where the object is free to rotate. Like reflection and translation, the pre – image is the figure to be rotated, the image is the object that is already rotated, and it is also usually labeled with the prime symbol.
