Definition

Division of integers is the process of finding how many times one integer is contained in another or determining the number that, when multiplied by the divisor, gives the dividend. Integers include positive whole numbers, negative whole numbers, and zero.

When dividing integers, the signs of the numbers determine the sign of the quotient:

  • Same signs → Positive quotient
    • (24 \div 6 = 4)
    • ((-24) \div (-6) = 4)
  • Different signs → Negative quotient
    • ((-24) \div 6 = -4)
    • (24 \div (-6) = -4)

Division by zero is undefined, so an integer cannot be divided by zero.

Division of integers builds on students’ understanding of whole-number division and the relationship between multiplication and division. Since multiplication and division are inverse operations, students can use multiplication facts to determine integer quotients. For example, because ((-5)(6)=-30), it follows that (-30 \div 6=-5).

An important part of dividing integers is understanding the rules for signs. When the dividend and divisor have the same sign, the quotient is positive. When they have different signs, the quotient is negative. Rather than simply memorizing these rules, students should connect them to patterns in multiplication and division. This helps develop a stronger understanding of operations with positive and negative numbers.

Students can apply integer division to real-world situations involving quantities above and below a reference point, such as gains and losses, changes in temperature, elevations, and financial transactions. Understanding integer division also prepares students for later work with rational numbers, expressions, equations, and algebra.

Division of integers is most directly connected to the U.S. Common Core State Standards (CCSS), particularly:

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.2.B – Students understand that integers can be divided when the divisor is not zero and that every quotient of integers is a rational number. They also understand the rules governing the signs of quotients.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.2.C – Students apply the properties of operations as strategies for multiplying and dividing rational numbers.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.3 – Students solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational numbers.

Through division of integers, students strengthen their understanding of signed numbers and learn to apply division accurately in mathematical and real-world contexts. This skill provides an important foundation for working with rational numbers and for solving increasingly complex algebraic problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the rules for dividing integers?

When dividing integers, use these sign rules:
Positive ÷ Positive = Positive
Negative ÷ Negative = Positive
Positive ÷ Negative = Negative
Negative ÷ Positive = Negative
For example, (-24) ÷ 6 = -4, while (-24) ÷ (-6) = 4.

How do I know if the quotient will be positive or negative?

Look at the signs of the two integers. If they have the same sign, the quotient is positive. If they have different signs, the quotient is negative.
For example, (-35) ÷ 7 = -5 because the integers have different signs.

Can an integer be divided by zero?

No. Division by zero is undefined because there is no number that can be multiplied by 0 to produce a nonzero dividend. For example, 12 ÷ 0 has no defined answer.
However, 0 can be divided by any nonzero integer. For example, 0 ÷ 5 = 0.
