Definition
Integer multiplication is the process of finding the product of two or more integers. Integers include positive whole numbers, negative whole numbers, and zero. When multiplying integers, the signs of the factors determine the sign of the product: factors with the same sign produce a positive product, while factors with different signs produce a negative product.
Integer multiplication extends students’ understanding of whole-number multiplication to include negative numbers. For example, 4×3=12, while (−4)×3=−12 and (−4)×(−3)=12. Students should understand the sign rules rather than simply memorize them. Patterns, number lines, and real-world situations involving gains and losses, changes in temperature, or repeated increases and decreases can help develop this understanding. Multiplication by zero is also important: the product of zero and any integer is always zero.
In the U.S. Common Core State Standards (CCSS), integer multiplication is primarily addressed in:
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.2. This standard requires students to apply and extend their previous understanding of multiplication and division and of fractions to multiply and divide rational numbers.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.2.A emphasizes understanding that multiplication is extended from fractions to rational numbers by requiring operations to continue satisfying properties such as the distributive property. Students learn that multiplying integers with like signs gives a positive product and multiplying integers with unlike signs gives a negative product.
Developing proficiency with integer multiplication prepares students for more advanced work with rational numbers, algebraic expressions, equations, and functions. It also reinforces important mathematical properties, including the commutative, associative, and distributive properties of multiplication.

When multiplying integers, use these sign rules:
Positive × Positive = Positive
Negative × Negative = Positive
Positive × Negative = Negative
Negative × Positive = Negative
Multiplying by a negative reverses the direction or sign of a number. Doing this twice reverses the direction twice, resulting in a positive value. That is why (-5) × (-2) = 10.
First, multiply the numbers without their signs. Then decide whether the answer should be positive or negative. If the integers have the same signs, the product is positive. If they have different signs, the product is negative.
