Definition

The unit circle is a circle with a radius of 1 unit centered at the origin (0,0)(0,0) on the coordinate plane. Every point on the unit circle satisfies the equation x2+y2=1x^2 + y^2 = 1. In trigonometry, the unit circle is used to define the sine, cosine, and tangent of an angle, where the cosine of an angle is the xx-coordinate and the sine is the yy-coordinate of the point on the circle corresponding to that angle.

Summary

The unit circle is a fundamental tool in trigonometry because it connects angles to trigonometric values in a consistent way. Angles are measured from the positive xx-axis, usually in radians, and move counterclockwise around the circle. By using the unit circle, students can find exact values of sine, cosine, and tangent for common angles, understand positive and negative values in different quadrants, and see relationships such as symmetry and periodicity in trigonometric functions.
