Definition:

Roman Numerals are symbols based on ancient Roman System. These symbols were used during Middle Ages and Renaissance period and up to these days we often see these symbols in building cornerstones, movie titles as well as on pages of the book. 

Roman Numeral symbols include I, V, X, L, C, D and M.

Summary:

FORMATION OF ROMAN NUMERALS

Rule 1 – When a smaller symbol is after the greater symbol, it’s added.
XI = 10 + 1 = 11

Rule 2 – If a number comes after itself, it’s added.
XX = 10 + 10 = 20

Rule 3 – When a small appears before the greater symbol, it is subtracted.
IV = 5 – 1 = 4

Rule 4 – The same symbol cannot be used more than three times in a row.
IV = 5 – 1 = 4 not IIII = 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4
