Definition

Division with remainders is the process of dividing one whole number by another when the dividend cannot be divided evenly into equal groups. The amount left over after making as many equal groups as possible is called the remainder. The remainder is always less than the divisor.

Division with remainders helps students understand that not all division problems result in a whole-number quotient. By using models such as arrays, equal groups, number lines, or place value strategies, students learn to divide numbers, determine the quotient, and identify any remaining amount. Understanding remainders also helps students solve real-world problems, such as sharing objects equally, organizing items into groups, or determining how many groups can be made with leftovers.
