What Is Composing Shapes?

Composing shapes means joining two or more simple shapes to make a larger shape or picture. Children may use circles, triangles, squares, rectangles and other familiar shapes as building pieces.

  • Join two or more simple shapes to make a larger shape or picture.
  • Check that pieces meet without unwanted gaps or overlaps.
  • Choose useful pieces and explain how a build works.
  • Practice Common Core K.G.B.6 by composing simple shapes with full sides touching.

Children can slide and turn pieces to test how their sides fit. In a neat composition, the chosen pieces meet without unwanted gaps or overlaps.

A larger shape can often be made in more than one way. Two matching right triangles can make a square, while four small squares can make the same square as two equal rectangles. Shape composition develops spatial reasoning.

Composing Shapes in Maker Town

Place two matching right triangles with their longest sides touching. Together, the two pieces make one square. The joining line runs diagonally across the square. Turn one triangle and try again. The same two pieces can make a different larger shape.

Children can test a piece by turning it, comparing its sides with the open space and checking whether it leaves a gap or covers another piece. This practical trial-and-improve process is an important part of early geometry.

A square can be composed from two equal rectangles or from four equal squares. The outside square stays the same, while the number and arrangement of the smaller pieces change. This pack aligns with CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.B.6, which asks Kindergarten learners to compose simple shapes to form larger shapes, including joining shapes with full sides touching.
