Definition
Edges are the straight line segments where two faces of a three-dimensional (3D) shape meet. Vertices (the plural of vertex) are the corner points where two or more edges come together. Edges and vertices help identify, describe, and compare solid figures such as cubes, rectangular prisms, pyramids, cones, and cylinders.
Understanding edges and vertices is an important part of early geometry. By identifying these features, students learn to recognize and describe three-dimensional shapes based on their attributes rather than simply by their appearance. For example, a cube has 12 edges and 8 vertices, while a square pyramid has 8 edges and 5 vertices. Students also discover that some 3D shapes, such as spheres, have no edges or vertices, while cylinders and cones have curved surfaces that are different from the flat faces found on many solid figures.
Hands-on activities, such as building models with blocks or examining everyday objects, help students count edges and vertices accurately.
