Definition

Patterns are repeated arrangements of objects, colors, shapes, numbers, sounds, or actions that follow a specific rule. An AB pattern repeats two different elements in order, such as red-blue-red-blue. An ABC pattern repeats three different elements in sequence, such as circle-square-triangle-circle-square-triangle. Learning patterns helps children recognize order, make predictions, and develop early math and reasoning skills.

Patterns are an important part of early mathematics because they help students develop critical thinking, observation, and problem-solving skills. By identifying, extending, and creating AB and ABC patterns, children learn to recognize relationships and predict what comes next in a sequence.
