Definition

In general, rational algebraic expression (RAE) is an expression that defines the ratio of two polynomials. In a simpler manner, RAE is a fraction whose both numerator and denominator are polynomials,

Summary

SUBTRACTING RAEs WITH DIFFERENT DENOMINATORS

When you subtract rational expressions with unlike denominators, remember the following steps:

  1. Find the LCM of the denominator. The LCM of the denominators of fraction or rational expressions is also called least common denominator, or LCD.
  2. Rewrite each expression as similar RAEs using the LCD. Make sure each term has the LCD as its denominator.
  3. Subtract the numerators.
  4. Simplify if possible.
