Definition
The normal distribution is a continuous probability distribution that is symmetrical, bell-shaped, and centered around its mean. It describes how data is distributed in many natural and social phenomena, such as heights, test scores, and measurement errors.
The mathematical formula for the normal distribution is:

where:

Summary
1. Characteristics
- Symmetry: The left and right sides are mirror images.
- Mean = Median = Mode: All are located at the center.
- Bell Shape: The highest point is at the mean.
- Empirical Rule (68–95–99.7 Rule):
- ~68% of data falls within 1 standard deviation of the mean
- ~95% within 2 standard deviations
- ~99.7% within 3 standard deviations
2. Standard Normal Distribution
- A special case with:
- Mean μ=0
- Standard deviation σ=1
- Used with z-scores to compare data across different normal distributions.

3. Applications
- Statistics: Estimating probabilities, making inferences.
- Psychology & Education: IQ scores, standardized testing.
- Natural Sciences: Measurement errors, biological data.
- Business & Finance: Risk analysis, stock returns.
4. Visual and Tabular Tools
- Bell curve graphs
- Z-tables to find probabilities
- Shading areas under the curve to represent likelihood
5. Importance in Statistics
- Many statistical methods (e.g., confidence intervals, hypothesis testing) assume data is normally distributed.
- Central Limit Theorem states that sample means tend to follow a normal distribution as sample size increases—even if the population is not normally distributed.
