Definition

The Law of Sines is a trigonometric rule that relates the lengths of the sides of a triangle to the sines of their opposite angles. For any triangle with sides aa, bb, and cc opposite angles AA, BB, and CC, respectively, the law states:

The Law of Sines is used to solve oblique triangles (triangles that are not right triangles). It is especially useful when:

  • Two angles and one side are known (ASA or AAS cases), or
  • Two sides and a non-included angle are known (SSA case, which may lead to zero, one, or two possible triangles—called the ambiguous case).
This law helps emphasize the proportional relationship between angles and their opposite sides in a triangle.

Summary

Law of Cosines

Definition:
The Law of Cosines is a trigonometric rule that generalizes the Pythagorean Theorem to all triangles. For any triangle with sides aa, bb, and cc and opposite angles AA, BB, and CC, the law is written as:

The Law of Cosines is used to solve oblique triangles when:

  • Two sides and the included angle are known (SAS), or
  • All three sides are known (SSS).
It is particularly helpful for finding an unknown side or angle when the Law of Sines cannot be applied directly. The law shows how side lengths and angles are connected through cosine, extending the ideas of right-triangle trigonometry to any triangle.
