Definition:

Algebraic Expressions are expressions that contain variables, coefficient and constants. These expressions are combination of terms and at least one arithmetic operation such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Summary:

PARTS OF ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION

3x + 8

CoefficientThe numerical factor of a multiplication expression that contains a variable.
Variable – A symbol for an unknown value.
Constant – A number that cannot change its value

Like Terms – You can only add terms in algebraic expressions if they are “like terms”. Like terms are terms whose variables and exponents are the same.

5x + 3y + 9x + 2 + 2y + 1

• 5x and 9x are like terms
• 3y and 2y are like terms
• 2 and 1 are like terms
