Definition
Missing Number Words are number names that are left out of a sequence and need to be identified and written correctly. Students use their understanding of counting order and number names to determine which word is missing.
For example:
one, two, _____, four, five
The missing number word is three.
Learning to identify missing number words helps young learners connect spoken number names, written number words, and counting sequences. In an activity, students may be given a sequence such as six, seven, _____, nine, and determine that eight is the missing number word.
Students can solve missing number word activities by counting forward or backward and identifying the number that comes before, after, or between other numbers. Using objects, number lines, number cards, and pictures can help children understand the sequence before moving to written number words.
These activities also strengthen number recognition, counting fluency, sequencing, and mathematical vocabulary. As students become more confident, they can work with longer sequences, backward counting, or sequences containing more than one missing number word.
Missing number word activities can support the following the U.S. Common Core State Standards (CCSS), particularly:
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.1 – Count to 100 by ones and by tens.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.2 – Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence instead of always beginning at 1.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.3 – Write numbers from 0 to 20 and represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0–20.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.1 – Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.2 – Count within 1,000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.3 – Read and write numbers to 1,000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.
