Definition

The arrangement of objects into rows and columns which forms a rectangle is called a rectangular array. Addition can be easily learned through the use of rectangular array.

Summary

Addition (+) is finding the total of two or more number when combined together.  The answer to the equation of addition is called  “sum”.

Examples: 2 + 2 = 4

A rectangular array can be composed of different kinds of objects as long as it still forms a rectangle. The rectangular array should have equal number of objects in its rows and columns.

There are two ways to use the array for Addition.

  • Count the number of objects in each row.
  • Add the total number of objects in each row.

Example: 3 + 3 = 6

  • Count the number of objects in each column.
  • Add the total number of objects in each column.

Example: 2 + 2 + 2 = 6

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a rectangular array?

A rectangular array is an arrangement of objects, symbols, or numbers in rows (horizontal) and columns (vertical) that forms a rectangle.
Each row must have the same number of objects.
Each column must have the same number of objects.

How do you find the sum using an array?

There are two primary ways to express the sum of an array:
By Rows: Add the number of objects in each row. If there are 3 rows with 4 dots each, the sum is 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
By Columns: Add the number of objects in each column. For the same array, there would be 4 columns with 3 dots each: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12.

What is “Repeated Addition”?

Repeated addition is the process of adding the same number multiple times. Rectangular arrays are the visual representation of this concept.
Example: An array with 2 rows and 5 columns shows the repeated addition equation 5 + 5 = 10. It can also show 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10.
