What is a Trapezoid?

A trapezoid is a quadrilateral that has two parallel sides and two non-parallel sides. It is more commonly known as a trapezium. In other words, a trapezoid is a polygon that has only one pair of parallel sides. These parallel sides are also called parallel bases of trapezoid. The other two sides of trapezoids are non-parallel and called legs of trapezoids. Since a trapezoid is a closed figure, it has both area as well as the perimeter.

How to find the area of a Trapezoid?

We can find the area of a trapezoid by taking the average of the two bases and multiplying it with the altitude. So, what is the formula for finding the area of a trapezoid?

The formula for finding the area of a Trapezoid

Let “ a “ and “ b “ be the two parallel sides of a trapezoid and let “ h “ be its altitude. The area of a trapezoid will be given by

Area of Trapezoid = 1/2 x ( a + b  ) x h

Let us understand it through an example.

Suppose we have a trapezoid having the parallel sides as 3 m and 5 m and height as 4 m. What will be its area?

We know that

Area of Trapezoid = 1/2 x ( a + b  ) x h

Here, we have a = 4, b = 5 and h = 4

Substituting these values in the above equation, we will have,

Area of Trapezoid = 1/2 x ( 4 + 5  ) x 4

⇒ Area of Trapezoid = 9 x 2 = 18 sq. m

How to find the perimeter of a Trapezoid?

We know that the perimeter of a closed figure is the sum of all its sides. Therefore, the perimeter of a trapezoid is also the sum of all its sides. Suppose, we have a trapezoid having sides a, b, c and d, then, the formula of the perimeter will be written as –

Perimeter of the Trapezoid = a + b + c + d

Let us understand it through an example.

Suppose we have a trapezoid having sides 3 cm, 4 cm, 5 cm and 7 cm respectively. What will be its perimeter?

We know that Perimeter of the Trapezoid = a + b + c + d

Here, a = 3, b = 4, c = 5, d = 7

Substituting these values in the above equation, we will have,

Perimeter of the Trapezoid = 3 + 4 + 5 + 7 = 19 cm

How to find the area of a Trapezoid using the Trapezoid Calculator?

The following steps are required to be taken in order to find the area of a trapezoid using a trapezoid calculator –

Step 1 –  The first step is to select the option of solving for the area. Below is a snapshot of how this option can be selected in the trapezoid calculator.

Step 2 – Once we have selected that we wish to find the area, the next step is to let the calculator know what the information available for finding the area is. There will be two options to choose from such as base a, base b and height; side c, side d, height and perimeter. Let us take an example, where we have been given one base of the trapezoid as 4 cm, the second base of the trapezoid as 6 cm and the height of the trapezoid as 5 cm. In order to enter these values, we shall select the option base a, base b and height in the drop-down section of the Given box in the trapezoid calculator. Below is a snapshot of how the drop-down box would like upon choosing base a, base b and height as selection –

Step 3 – Once we have selected base a, base b and height as the given option, we will be asked to enter the value of the base a, base b and height in the options below. Below is a snapshot of how the drop-down box would like for entering the values of the base a, base b and height –

Step 4 – Now that we have chosen both what is required and what is given, we need to click on the calculate button. As soon as we click on the calculate button, we shall be shown the result on the right-hand side of the information that we entered in the above steps. Below is a snapshot of how the result would be displayed once we click on the calculate button.
