Note: If students cannot readily break up or build numbers (e.g. see 5 as being 2 + 3) then they may struggle when using adding and subtracting strategies (e.g. viewing 8 + 5 as 8 + 2 + 3 = 10 + 3 = 13).  
The number 5 can be made using two other numbers. Draw blobs (or any shapes you like) to show how these two numbers make up 5. The first one is done for you.
