Definition
Subtraction with borrowing, also called regrouping, is a method used when the digit in the minuend (top number) is smaller than the corresponding digit in the subtrahend (bottom number). In this process, a value is borrowed from the next place value to the left. For example, in 52 − 28, the 2 in the ones place cannot subtract 8, so 1 ten is regrouped as 10 ones, making the calculation 12 − 8 = 4, while the tens place becomes 4 − 2 = 2. The answer is 24.
