## What is Rounding Calculator

A Rounding Calculator is an online tool that helps to round off a number to a specified number of decimal places or significant figures. It is useful in situations where you need to simplify the number to a certain level of precision.

For example, if you have a number like 3.14159265 and you only need to use it to two decimal places, you can use the rounding calculator to round it off to 3.14. Similarly, if you have a large number like 325,964, and you only need to use it to the nearest thousand, you can use the rounding calculator to round it off to 326,000.

## Basic rules to round numbers

1. Determine the digit you want to round: Look at the digit to the right of the digit you want to round. If it’s 5 or greater, round up. If it’s 4 or less, round down.
2. Identify the place value you want to round to: Determine whether you want to round to a specific number of decimal places, significant figures, or to the nearest whole number, hundred, thousand, etc.
3. Round up or down: If the digit you want to round is 5 or greater, round up by increasing the digit you want to round by 1. If the digit is 4 or less, round down by leaving the digit you want to round as it is.
4. Adjust trailing digits: If you rounded up, you may need to adjust trailing digits to the right of the rounded digit to 0. If you rounded down, these digits can simply be dropped.

For example, if you wanted to round the number 3.746 to two decimal places, you would:

1. Look at the digit in the third decimal place (4) and note that it is less than 5, so we will round down.
2. Identify the second decimal place as the place value we want to round to.
3. Round down to 3.74 by leaving the digit in the second decimal place (4) as it is.
4. No adjustment is needed for trailing digits since we rounded down.

Therefore, the rounded number is 3.74.

## Rounding to the nearest tenth, hundred, and thousand place

1. Identify the digit in the place value you want to round to. For example, if you want to round to the nearest tenth, identify the digit in the tenths place.
2. Look at the digit to the right of the place value you want to round to. If it is 5 or greater, round up. If it is less than 5, round down.
3. If you are rounding up, add 1 to the digit in the place value you want to round to. If you are rounding down, leave the digit as it is.
4. Replace all digits to the right of the place value you rounded to with zeros.

Examples:

• Rounding 7.346 to the nearest tenth: The digit in the tenths place is 4. The digit to the right of the tenths place is 6, which is 5 or greater. Therefore, we round up to 7.3.
• Rounding 34.187 to the nearest hundred: The digit in the hundredths place is 1. The digit to the right of the hundredths place is 8, which is 5 or greater. Therefore, we round up to 34.2.
• Rounding 1984.3921 to the nearest thousand: The digit in the thousands place is 1. The digit to the right of the thousands place is 9, which is 5 or greater. Therefore, we round up to 1985.
