BASIC NUMBER PROPERTIES OF MULTIPLICATION
- COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY – The product of two numbers is not affected by the order in which they are being multiplied. Numbers can be multiplied in any order since the product remains the same.
- ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY – The product of two numbers is always the same regardless of how you group them. Any change in their grouping does not affect the product.
- IDENTITY PROPERTY – Any number multiplied by one (1) is equal to the number itself.
- DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY – Adding two numbers and multiplying it to an outside number is the same as multiplying the outside number to every number inside the parenthesis, then adding their products.
COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY: 3 x 2 = 2 x 3
ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY: (1 x 2) x 3 = 1 x (2 x 3)
IDENTITY PROPERTY: 2 x 1 = 2 or 1 x 2 = 2
DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY: 3 (4 + 5) = 3 (4) + 3 (5)
