Definition:
We use decimals in everyday living. When you buy goods from the grocery store, counting your money and savings, and even in cooking and baking, decimals are important! In this pack, we will learn more about solving decimal numbers.
Summary:
ADDITION OF MULTI-DIGIT DECIMALS
- Write the numbers in a vertical column and align the decimal points.
- Add each column of digits, from the right and towards left. If the sum of a column exceeds ten, “carry” digits to the next column on the left.
- Place the decimal point in the answer directly below the decimal points in the terms.
SUBTRACTION OF MULTI-DIGIT DECIMALS
- Write the numbers in a vertical column and align the decimal points.
- Add each column of digits, from the right and towards left. If the digit being subtracted in a column is larger than the digit above it, “borrow” a digit from the next column to the left.
- Place the decimal point in the answer directly below the decimal points in the terms.
MULTIPLICATION OF MULTI-DIGIT DECIMALS
- Multiply the numbers in the same manner with whole numbers.
- Arrange the numbers on the right – do not align the decimal points.
- Starting with the last digit on the right, multiply each digit in the top number by each digit in the bottom number, just as with whole numbers.
- Add the products.
- Put the decimal point in the answer by starting at the right and moving a number of places equal to the sum of the decimal places in both numbers multiplied.
DIVISION OF MULTI-DIGIT DECIMALS
- If the divisor is a decimal number, move the decimal point to right to make it a whole number and move the decimal point in dividend the same number of places.
- Perform division. Keep dividing until the answer terminates or repeats.
- Put decimal point directly above decimal point in the dividend.
