Definition
A system of linear equations involves multiple equations with the same variables, solved together to find their common solution. For example, x+y=8 and 3x-y=6 are both linear equations with two variables. When we consider them together, they will form a system of linear equations.
Summary
The solution of a linear equation is the point at which the lines representing the linear equations intersect.
The solution(s) to a system of linear equations correspond to the point(s) where the graphs of the equations intersect. For example, the two lines on the graph intersect at the point (2, 3). So, the solution to the system of equations is (2,3), or x = 2 and y = 3.
The solutions of a system of linear equations are also the values of the variables that make all the equations true.
What are the possible outcomes for solutions to a system of linear equations?
No Solution
When a system of linear equations is parallel to each other
One Solution
When a system of linear equations intersects at an ordered pair
Infinite Solutions
When two equations represent the same line
