Definition

• Rounding is making a number less complicated but keeping its value close to what it was.
• Rounding off makes the result  less accurate, but easier to use.
• It makes calculation a lot easier to do and results easier to understand, given that the exact values are not too important.

Summary

When rounding off decimals to the tenth…

To round a number to the nearest tenth, look at the next place value to the right (the hundredths). If it’s 4 or less, just remove all the digits to the right. If it’s 5 or greater, add 1 to the digit in the ones place, and then remove all the digits to the right.

Examples:
Round off 56.584 and 19.409 to the nearest tenth.

56.584             56.59

19.409             19.40

When rounding off decimals to the hundredth…

To round a number to the nearest hundredth , look at the next place value to the right (the thousandths). If it’s 4 or less, just remove all the digits to the right. If it’s 5 or greater, add 1 to the digit in the ones place, and then remove all the digits to the right.

Examples:

Round off 0.129 and 0.982 to the nearest hundredth.

0.129             0.13
0.982             0.98

When rounding off decimals to the thousandth…

To round a number to the nearest thousandth , look at the next place value to the right (the ten thousandths). If it’s 4 or less, just remove all the digits to the right. If it’s 5 or greater, add 1 to the digit in the ones place, and then remove all the digits to the right.
