Definition

A quadratic equation is a polynomial equation of degree two, usually written in the standard formax2+bx+c=0ax^2 + bx + c = 0

where aa, bb, and cc are real numbers and a0a \neq 0. The solutions of a quadratic equation are called roots or zeros, which are the values of xx that make the equation true.

Summary

Quadratic equations describe relationships where the highest power of the variable is squared. They can be solved using several methods, including factoring, completing the square, using the quadratic formula, and graphing. The graph of a quadratic equation is a parabola, which may open upward or downward depending on the value of aa. The number and type of solutions are determined by the discriminant (b24acb^2 – 4ac), which indicates whether the equation has two real solutions, one real solution, or no real solutions. Quadratic equations are widely used in mathematics, physics, engineering, and real-life applications such as modeling motion, area, and profit.
