Definition
Rational numbers are numbers that can be written as a fraction in the form , where and are integers and . Their decimal forms either terminate or repeat.
Irrational numbers are numbers that cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers. Their decimal forms are non-terminating and non-repeating.
The properties of rational and irrational numbers describe how these two types of numbers behave under basic mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Summary
Closure Property
- Rational numbers are closed under addition, subtraction, and multiplication, but not division by zero.
- Irrational numbers are not closed under these operations.
Operations Involving Rational and Irrational Numbers
- Rational ± Rational = Rational
- Rational × Rational = Rational
- Rational ± Irrational = Irrational
- Rational × Irrational = Irrational (except when multiplying by 0)
- Irrational ± Irrational or × Irrational can be rational or irrational
Commutative and Associative Properties
- Rational numbers follow the commutative and associative properties for addition and multiplication.
- Irrational numbers may follow these properties depending on the operation.
