On October 24, the UN celebrates the anniversary of the day the UN Charter went into effect in 1945. The annual celebration of UN Day provides a chance to advance our shared goals and uphold the objectives and tenets of the UN Charter that have served as our compass for the past 76 years.

## Introduction to Negative Numbers

Anything less than zero is considered a **negative number.** When you hit 0 while counting backward, you enter the negative number range.

On a number line, negative numbers are those to the left of zero, and positive numbers are those to the right of zero.

When a number is negative, it is written with a minus sign in front. For example, -8 would be called “minus 8” or “negative 8.”

The negative sign indicates how many steps away a number is from zero. Therefore -4 is four steps away from zero.
