Definition

Mixed rounding (10s, 100s) is the process of rounding whole numbers to either the nearest ten or the nearest hundred, depending on the instructions. Rounding makes numbers easier to estimate, compare, and use in mental math while keeping the value close to the original number.

When rounding to the nearest ten, students look at the ones digit. If the ones digit is 5 or greater, the tens digit increases by one and the ones digit becomes 0. If the ones digit is 4 or less, the tens digit stays the same and the ones digit becomes 0. For example, 47 rounds to 50, while 42 rounds to 40.

When rounding to the nearest hundred, students look at the tens digit. If the tens digit is 5 or greater, the hundreds digit increases by one and the tens and ones digits become 0. If the tens digit is 4 or less, the hundreds digit stays the same and the tens and ones digits become 0. For example, 367 rounds to 400, while 342 rounds to 300.
