Definition

Mixed number subtraction is the process of subtracting one mixed number from another, or subtracting a fraction or whole number from a mixed number. A mixed number contains a whole number and a fraction, such as 3123 \frac{1}{2}. To subtract mixed numbers, students may subtract the whole numbers and fractions separately when possible. If the fractional part of the minuend is smaller than the fractional part of the subtrahend, regrouping (borrowing) from the whole number is necessary.

Subtracting mixed numbers is an important skill that helps students understand the relationship between whole numbers and fractions. This concept is commonly used in real-life situations involving measurement, cooking, construction, and time. Students learn how to regroup whole numbers into fractions, find common denominators when needed, and apply subtraction accurately.

This topic aligns with U.S. Common Core State Standards (CCSS), particularly in the following areas:

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.1: Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, including mixed numbers, by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.2: Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers using visual fraction models or equations.

Through these standards, students are encouraged to develop conceptual understanding as well as procedural fluency. They use models, number lines, and equations to explain their reasoning and solve problems involving mixed numbers in practical contexts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mixed number?

A mixed number is a number made of a whole number and a fraction together.
Example:
3123 \frac{1}{2}
7347 \frac{3}{4}

How do you subtract mixed numbers with the same denominator?

Subtract the whole numbers first, then subtract the fractions. Example:
5382185 \frac{3}{8} – 2 \frac{1}{8}Subtract wholes:
52=35 – 2 = 3Subtract fractions:
3818=28=14\frac{3}{8} – \frac{1}{8} = \frac{2}{8} = \frac{1}{4}Answer:
3143 \frac{1}{4}

What if the top fraction is smaller than the bottom fraction?

You need to regroup or borrow from the whole number. Example:
6152356 \frac{1}{5} – 2 \frac{3}{5}Borrow 1 from 6:
615=5656 \frac{1}{5} = 5 \frac{6}{5}Now subtract:
5652355 \frac{6}{5} – 2 \frac{3}{5}Whole numbers:
52=35 – 2 = 3Fractions:
6535=35\frac{6}{5} – \frac{3}{5} = \frac{3}{5}Answer:
3353 \frac{3}{5}
