Definition

Mixed-number addition is the process of adding numbers that consist of a whole number and a fraction (e.g., $2 \frac{1}{3}$ ). To add mixed numbers, students typically add the fractional parts and the whole numbers separately, then combine the results. If the fractional sum is an improper fraction, it is converted into a mixed number and simplified.
