Definition
Comparing numbers to 1 million is the process of determining whether one whole number is greater than, less than, or equal to another number, with values ranging from 0 to 1,000,000. Students compare numbers by examining the value of each digit, starting with the greatest place value (hundred thousands, ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones). They use the comparison symbols > (greater than), < (less than), and = (equal to) to express the relationship between two numbers.
Comparing numbers up to 1 million helps students strengthen their understanding of place value and the size of whole numbers. Rather than focusing only on the number of digits, students learn to compare corresponding digits from left to right until they find the first place where the digits differ. This skill enables learners to arrange numbers in ascending and descending order, estimate quantities, interpret data in charts and graphs, and solve real-world problems involving populations, distances, budgets, and measurements.
