Definition

The Binomial Theorem is a fundamental algebraic principle that describes the expansion of powers of a binomial expression. It states that:

Summary

Formula and Expansion:

  • Explains how to expand expressions without multiplying the binomial repeatedly.
  • Demonstrates the pattern of terms and coefficients.

Pascal’s Triangle:

  • Shows how binomial coefficients correspond to the entries in Pascal’s Triangle.
  • Illustrates how each coefficient can be derived from the sum of two adjacent coefficients above it.

Properties of Binomial Coefficients:

  • Symmetry property
  • Relationships between consecutive coefficients.

Applications:

  • Algebraic expansions
  • Probability (binomial probability distribution)
  • Combinatorics (counting problems)
  • Calculus (approximation of functions using the Binomial Series for any real exponent)

Extensions:

  • For non-integer exponents, the theorem extends to an infinite series known as the generalized binomial theorem.
