Definition
An array is a group of objects, numbers, or symbols arranged in equal rows and equal columns. Arrays are commonly used in mathematics to help students understand multiplication and repeated addition. For example, an array with 3 rows and 4 columns represents the multiplication sentence . Arrays help learners visualize how numbers are organized into groups.
Arrays are an important strategy for teaching multiplication and division concepts. By arranging objects into rows and columns, students can see equal groups clearly and better understand repeated addition, multiplication facts, and area models. Arrays also help students recognize patterns and develop problem-solving skills.
Students often use arrays with counters, dots, tiles, or drawings to represent multiplication equations. For example, an array with 5 rows of 2 objects each shows 5×2=10. Arrays also support the understanding of division because students can separate objects into equal rows or columns.
This topic is connected to the U.S. Common Core State Standards (CCSS), particularly in the following areas:
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.C.4: Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.1: Interpret products of whole numbers using equal groups and arrays.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.B.5: Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide using arrays and area models.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.C.7: Relate area to multiplication and addition by using arrays to find the area of rectangles.
