Definition:

Polynomials are mathematical expressions that contain coefficients, variables, constants, exponents and two or more operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

We can simply add polynomials by adding any like terms together. Like terms are terms that have the same variables and exponents.

Summary:

STEPS IN ADDING POLYNOMIALS

Step 1 – Remove all parentheses by distributing the operation sign. In the case of addition, distributing the addition sign will not change the the sign of the terms but will remove the parentheses.

Step 2 – Arrange each term with the highest degree first then in decreasing order of degree.

Step 3 – Group terms whose variables and exponents are the same. Combine like terms and simplify.
