Definition:
Adding 2-digit numbers is the same as adding 1-digit values, except that you have to go through the process of addition more than once. You have to start by adding the numbers in the ones column (rightmost) and then add the numbers in the tens column (leftmost).
Summary:
What do we do when the answer to the ones column is a 2-digit number, like the ones presented below? Let the camp leader show you how.
The numbers that you add together are called ADDENDS. Once added, the result is called the SUM.
6 + 8 is 14. But you cannot write 14 on the ones column since 14 belongs to the tens column. Therefore, you have to write 4 on the ones column and then carry over number 1 (which is = 10) on top of the tens column where it belongs.
After carrying it over to the tens column, add the addends in the tens column (10+10) = 20. But instead of writing 20, write the digit 2 which signifies 20, being in the tens column.
The equation also means:
(6+8 = 14) ones + (10) tens
or 14 + 10 = 24 (sum)
