Definition:

Every digit of a number has value based on its place or position. Shown using the example below how important place value of a digit is to understand the value of a whole number. 23 means there are 2 sets of 10’s and 3 sets of ones. The representation simply shows how to perfectly illustrate the value of a digit based on its place or position.

Place value is a value represented by a digit in a number on the basis of its position in the number. 

Summary:

The smallest two-digit number is 10.
In every two-digit number, there are two places:

  • Tens – placed at the left side; ten times the original value
  • Ones– placed at the right side; original value

Example:

‘25’ means 20 TENS and 5 ONES
