RULES IN SUBTRACTING WHOLE NUMBERS AND DECIMALS

  • Put the numbers in a vertical column, aligning the decimal point.
  • Subtract each column, starting on the right and working left. Know when to regroup numbers when subtracting.
  • Place the decimal point in the answer directly below the decimal points in the terms.
  • Check your answer by adding the result to the number subtracted. The sum should equal the first number.

Example:

Find the difference when 31. 53 is taken from 57.78. 

57 .78 – 31 .53 = 46 .25
