This premium worksheet bundle contains 10 activities to challenge your students and help them understand solving linear equations in one variable integral coefficients and rational coefficients
An equation is a mathematical statement that two expressions are equal and always contain an equal sign. The simplest type of algebraic equation is a linear equation that has just one variable.
A linear equation is an equation where the highest exponent of the variable is 1.
Solving an equation means finding the value of the variable that makes the equation true. When we add or subtract the same thing from both sides the equation stays in balance.
To solve linear equations, there is one main goal: isolate the variable. The following will give us the tools that we need to solve linear equations.
Addition and Subtraction Properties of Equality
For all real numbers
If a = b, then a + c = b + c
If a = b, then a - c = b - c
If two expressions are equal to each other, and you add or subtract the same value to both sides of the equation, the equation will remain equal.
Multiplication and Division Properties of Equality
For all real numbers
If a = b, then a(c) = b(c)
If a = b, then a/c = b/c where c is not equal to 0.
If two expressions are equal to each other and you multiply or divide both sides by the same number, the resulting expressions will also be equivalent.
