Fractions are numbers that are used to represent a part of a whole or a part of a thing. We can say that if we divide a pizza by 8 and the people who’s going to eat the pizza is also 8, each person can eat ⅛ of the pizza that was served.


A number line is a line that represents numbers of equal intervals. This line also extends from the middle, going to the left and to the right.

Like fractions are group of fractions that have the same denominator while unlike fractions are group of fractions that have different denominators.


Like fractions: 1/7, 2/7, 3/7, 4/7, 5/7
Unlike fractions: 1/12, 1/6, 1/4, 1/3, 5/12

Example: Put 1/8, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, and 8/8 in a number line.

First thing we need to understand is how to arrange them from least to greatest. In like fractions, the lowest denominator is the smallest, and the biggest number is the greatest. So for this example, the first fraction in the number line is 1/8 and the last number is 8/8 which is also equal to 1.

⅛ 2/8 ⅜ 4/8 ⅝ 6/8 ⅞ 1
