Definition:

We can use different strategies in adding or subtracting numbers. One of these is using Place Value. Place value is the basis of our entire number system. A place value system is one in which the position of a digit in a number determines its value.

Summary:

Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones.

In adding or subtracting using its place value, we can break down the standard form into expanded form. Add or subtract ones from ones, tens from tens and hundreds from hundreds. Always start from the ones place value.

Example:

353 + 120 = 473

3 hundreds, 5 tens, 3 ones (300 + 50 + 3)
1 hundreds, 2 tens, 0 ones (100 + 20 + 0)
4 hundreds, 7 tens, 3 ones (400 + 70 + 3)
